Starship Troopers, Judge Dredd, The Craft

Starship_troopers_poster

I really hated Starship Troopers when I first saw it but I really enjoyed it now. It was a bit ahead of its time. 4.25/5

Judge_dredd_poster

Judge Dredd isn't a good movie but it is fun. Much better than I remember. 3/5

The_craft_poster

If The Craft were released today, it would be the launching film of a teen witch franchise. All the shitty tropes of tween films are here in horrible fashion. 2/5

MacGruber, The Expendables

Macgruber_poster

One of the better SNL films, MacGruber bombed in the theaters but should see a second life on DVD. It's surprisingly fun and witty. 3.5/5

The_expendables_poster_1

The Expendables is everything I expected. It's loud, explosive and over-the-top. I really enjoyed it. Sure it could have been better but then that can be said for any film. On the level with most B-level 80's action films. 3.5/5

Demolition Man, Cruising, Resident Evil

Demolition_man

Stallone is having a bit of a career resurgence. Demolition Man is back when he still had a career. It's such a fun movie that it's easy to over look it's flaws. 3.75/5

Cruising_1980_poster

I've put off watching Cruising for years. Directed by William Friedkin when he was at the top of his game, Cruising is a great movie. It's not for everyone as will give you more details about the gay S&M life in the early 80's than you probably ever wanted to know. Rumor has it that Al Pacino refuses to talk about this movie. I don't know why. He's great. 4/5

Resident_evil

I was in the mood for a fun horror movie and Resident Evil is the perfect solution. It's not deep, the actors run from one spot to another and some of the special effects are questionable but damn do I enjoy it. 3.5/5

The Rocky Series

I've watched the entire Rocky series from beginning to end. While there are some great moments, the overall series is a bit of a dud. Parts 2-4 are just lame remakes of the first one. Part V is hands down the weakest of the bunch. Rocky Balboa is a loving homage to all the parts of Philly that Stallone loves but the first hour drags and the movie ends in a pretty predictable fashion. Bill Conti's score is amazing. He's created of the great iconic scores in film history. It's greatness. 2.7/5

Rocky

It's a bit slow and dated by today's standards, plus anyone that grew up on The Karate Kid will know all the beats as director John G Alvidson wholesale ripped off Rocky to create it. The first hour drags and Rocky is a pretty unlikeable character. Plus, the first date with Adrian has high creep factor where it looks like Rocky is about to date rape her. Still the movie has heart and it's hard to deny it's charm. 3.5/5

Rocky2

The first hour is sadly predictable and the second hour is even worse. Rocky II is the beginning of Rocky cycle where the next few films rinse and repeat. 3/5

Rocky3

I don't know what happened here. For pure entertainment value, Rocky III one might be my favorite. Hulk Hogan makes his big screen debut and he looks coked out and greasy. That's followed by the great fight with Clubber Lang (Mr. T). Plus you get the emotional death of the beloved Micky (Burgess Meredith). It's not great but it's lots of fun. 3.5/5

Rockyiv

Too much of a comic book for my taste. Rocky fights Russia. The crazy fight between Apollo Creed and Ivan Drako is just bizarre. It's worth watching for that alone. 2.5/5

Rocky_v

Rocky V is a miss on almost every level. It's stupid, miserable and massively annoying. 1/5

Rocky-balboa-poster-1

After watching Rocky V, Rocky Balboa seems like high art but the truth is the movie is better than expected but still not all that great. The first half is spent telling us that Adrian has died and Rocky is now whoring himself out at the restaurant he owns telling the same lame stories over and over like some dancing monkey. The basic story is so improbably, it's a joke. Why would a 60 year-old go up against a 20 year-old in the prime of his career? He should have had his ass knocked out in the first round but no, Rocky lasts the full ten and almost wins. 2.75/5

Overall, I'm glad this is experiment is over and I don't have to watch these movies ever again.

RoboCop, Tango & Cash, Saw 2

Robocop

RoboCop is easily one of the best films of the 80's. Way ahead of it's time. It just gets better with each viewing. 5/5

Tangoandcash

You can tell that everyone making Tango & Cash has a great time. Well maybe not the director since it looks like he was replace. 3.75/5

Saw2

My favorite of the Saw series, Saw II has great twists and turns. It keeps you guessing up till the end. 3.5/5
