Beginners, Jane Eyre, TT3D: Closer to the Edge

Beginners_poster

Beginners is an amazing film. The time shifting and non-linear storytelling add depth and bring the story to life. 4/5

Jane_eyre_poster

Jane Eyre is much better than it has any right to be. I normally don't really care for costume dramas but it's very well done. 4/5

Tt3d-closertotheedge-poster

TT3d: Closer to the Edge is a compelling look into a freakishly dangerous race. A couple of people died while filming the race. 3.75/5

Our Idiot Brother, Quills, Too Much Pussy

Our-idiot-brother-poster

Despite the excellent cast, Our Idiot Brother doesn't work as a comedy or a drama. It skirts the edges of both and fails on both counts. 2.5/5

Quills_poster

I haven't seen Quills since it's initial theatrical release. It doesn't hold up very well. It's about 15 minutes too long. 2.5/5

Too-much-pussy_movie_poster

Too Much Pussy is an odd documentary about a group of feminist artists as they travel around Europe. More of a curiosity piece than anything. Hard to recommend. 3/5

Snowtown, Pina, Territoires

Snowtown_poster

Snowtown is one of the more disturbing films I've seen this year. It's a cold and brutal watch and not easy to recommend but an incredible viewing experience. 4.25/5

Pina_film

I'm not sure who the audience is for Pina. If you are a fan of Pina Baush's work, you would probably want to watch a performance. If you want to learn more about the artist, you won't learn any more than you did before the film started. 3/5

Territories

Territoires is a disturbing film about homeland security gone too far. Solid movie that plays out in a rather believable fashion. 3.75/5

The Guard, Bridesmaids, Square Grouper

The_guard_poster

Very Irish film. The Guard is funny but I think if you're from the UK, I think you'll really love it. 3.5/5

Bridesmaids-movie-poster

Bridesmaids might be the biggest disappointment of the year for me. After hearing so many good things, I found it surprisingly unfunny. 2/5

Squaregrouperposter_sm

Square Grouper is a decent documentary about pot trafficking in Florida from the 70's up to present. Worth a watch not nothing amazing. 3.5/5

The Greatest Movie Ever Sold, Scream 4, Bad Teacher

The_greatest_movie_ever_sold_p

I like Morgan Spurlock and was quite looking forward to this. The film is quite fun the final message is lacking. When it's all over, it's pretty easy to dismiss. 3.25/5

Scream-4-poster

I liked Scream 4 overall. The problem is it tries to hard to be clever and meta that it forgets to be a horror film. 3.25/5

Bad-teacher-poster

Bad Teacher is the funniest film I've seen this year. If you like black comedies, this is very much worth a watch. I really expected to not like it. 3.5/5

X-Men: First Class, Take Me Home Tonight, Secret Origin: History of DC Comics

X-men-first-class-poster

X-Men: First Class is a lot of fun. I enjoyed it almost as much as the second X-Men film. 3.75/5

Take-me-home-tonight-poster

Take Me Home Tonight is an 80's John Cusack film done with Topher Grace. It doesn't really work. It would have been great 30 years ago. 2.5/5

Secret-origin-history-dc-comic

Secret Origin: History of DC Comics is a joke. It's basically a puff piece about DC Comics that doesn't offer any depth or insight into the history of the company. 2/5

The Ghost Writer, The Way Back, Marwencol

The-ghost-writer-poster-303x45

Upon watching The Ghost Writer again, I enjoyed movie much more. I would say it's easily one of the best films of last year and up there with Chinatown as far as intrigue goes. 4.5/5

The-way-back-poster

The Way Back isn't Peter Weir's best film. It's a pretty straightforward story. Ed Harris does a great job. 3.5/5

Marwencol_poster_285

Marwencol is one of the best documentaries of last year. Riveting to watch. 4.25/5
